Rowan smiled as he kissed her. “Okay,” she smiled and leaned into his shoulder. She nuzzled her nose into his shirt and closed her eyes. She asked the question because she knew they weren’t as close as they used to be, and she thought maybe he didn’t love her anymore. She…

Rowan nodded and took Van’s hand as he helped her up. There was a cold breeze, but Van pulled her closer to him and she instantly felt warmer. She studied the signs and lights, resting her head on Van’s shoulder occasionally. “I don’t know, how about Starbucks?” she smiled wide. “I’ll pay for the coffee, since I was supposed to pay for dinner,” she raised her eyebrow. “You’re not gonna get away with it.” She kissed his cheek, taking his hand and leading them to Starbucks. It was cold, so Rowan released Van’s hand and sprinted into the Starbucks, looking out the glass door to watch him catch up. As he did, she smiled. “C’mon, let’s get in line.”

She asked the question because she knew they weren’t as close as they used to be, and she thought maybe he didn’t love her anymore. She looked up at Van and took in everything: his hair, eyes, nose…everything. She smiled, batting her big hazel eyes up at him, a signal to hold her closer. All she really wanted to be was in Van’s arms. She sighed contently, as her fingers played with his.

Rowan nodded and sighed, “Right.” She didn’t look up at him, but she turned her face away from him, looking up at the picture on the wall. She sighed heavily, trying to think of topics they could talk about but nothing was coming to mind. She didn’t want to talk about California or growing up anymore. She intertwined her fingers in his, looking up at him with the puppy dog eyes again. “Do you still love me?” she said, quietly and a bit melancholy. She just needed to assure herself. She wouldn’t be able to hear no come from his lips. “I still love you,” she said, quietly again and looked away from Van quickly before he responded.

Rowan nodded and smiled back at Van when he started singing along. She snuggled into his chest and closed her eyes. When he said college shouldn’t be a problem, she shrugged. “It’s just coming way too fast, you know? I just wish we could take it slowly.” She sighed deeply and shrugged her shoulders, loosening Van’s grip on her. “Sometimes, I don’t want to grow up,” she said quietly and under her breath. She sat there in the moment of silence, thinking it over. Van was becoming an adult, Rowan was still technically a child when looked through parents’ eyes. She sighed, leaning back on his chest and just thinking over college in general. And she thought about how Van wanted to marry her. Sure it seemed great at the moment, but Rowan wasn’t sure if she was ready for all of it yet.

She smiled up at him and wrapped his arm around her body. When he held her close again, she felt more like herself. It was the little things Van did that made Rowan appreciate him and love him even more. She closed her eyes, feeling very content and letting out a big sigh of relief. She began to hum the tune of “Your Song” by Elton John, and smiled up at him again. “It’s funny,” she said, quietly. “You’re… You’re graduating.” It was weird how he was older than her and to think that he was graduating somewhat blew her mind. She wasn’t ready for him to go to college, or not yet, at least.

Rowan looked up at him again. “Don’t feel bad. I guess I’m a handful. I don’t want to add onto your list of problems. And I know I was pushing you away, it’s my fault too. I just… I just wanted to be independent or something. I don’t even know.” Rowan was confusing herself, but thankfully the waiter brought over their food just in time. She ate quietly, glancing over at Van sometimes and blushing and smiling when their eyes met. She offered him a bite of her spring roll and took a sip of her water. They didn’t have to worry about anything else except the moment right now.

“You are not a handful, Ro. Life is a handful, but you are not. It doesn’t even matter anymore. All that matters is that we have each other.” Van smiled at Rowan after he had finished his meal. He leaned back in the booth and rested his hand on her thigh. “So have you given California any more thought?” He knew moving to California was a good thing, but he really wanted to go to UCLA. He knew he’d be happy in New York, but a big part of him wanted a change in scenery. UCLA was a great school and they had a great. He hoped that Rowan would actually consider moving to California.

Rowan smiled and nodded. “All we need is each other.” She didn’t clear her plate, but she was finished and she leaned up against Van as he put his hand on her thigh. Everything was wonderful. When Van asked about California, she sighed. “I thought we were going? If that’s what you want, UCLA…then we’re going to California.” She half heartedly smiled at Van. Something just didn’t seem right about  it. But it’s not like she’d be on her own. Van would be there. She just didn’t want to spend majority of the nights alone. College scared her. Especially Van being a senior and she being only a junior. She was afraid one night he’d come home drunk or something and she would have no idea what to do. She never saw Van drunk, but she had heard he loved to party.

Rowan nodded. “Yes, I’m okay. I’m sorry.” She looked up at Van, almost with puppy dog eyes to let him know she was sorry. “I love you.” She leaned in closer to his body and grabbed his opposite hand and started playing with his fingers, bending them and interlocking them with hers, then repeating. She felt bad for that little moment of silence. She hated how off and on she was with him. She needed to stop confusing him and be the girlfriend that he needs. She interlocked their fingers together, squeezing his hand lightly. “I’m so…weird I guess we could say. I can’t do these things to you. I make you feel bad and you didn’t do anything. I guess I just want attention from you or something, I don’t know.” She looked up at him again, biting her lip. Maybe that’s all she wanted was a little more attention from him. She looked around to see if the waiter was anywhere in sight, hoping he could break this awkward moment.

As he kissed her passionately, Rowan could feel herself blushing. They were in public and kissing like this? She pulled away, smiling at him and placing her hand on his chest to inform him that it was enough-for now. She didn’t want things to get too intense. She cleared her throat and looked away from Van for a bit. He turned her on so easily, she couldn’t help herself. She moved over a bit so his arm would fall off of her shoulders, then she paused. Is this what Van meant by pushing him away? She moved back closer to him and put his arm around her shoulders again. She didn’t say anything, or at least wanted to try not to say anything so she wouldn’t mess anything up.

Van smiled even more when Rowan put her hand on his thigh. It seemed like all he could do around her was smile. Not that smiling was a bad thing, he was so happy that he had a reason to smile. Van couldn’t help but laugh as he listened to Rowan. “I’ll help you and we can play it together. It’s not that difficult once you get the hang of it. It does get confusing at times, but you’re smart and I know you’ll kick ass at it.” Van shook his head and kissed Rowan’s neck. “You are so adorable. I am perfectly fine with you getting mad over a video game. It’s actually pretty entertaining.” He ordered their food when the waiter came by. Once the waiter was gone Van turned his full attention to Rowan. “You’re so beautiful.”

Rowan shook her head as Van laughed at her. “It’s not funny!” but she was smiling anyway. “As long as you’ll help me out, well, I think I’ll be fine.” She stuck her tongue out at him, “Glad I could be your entertainment for tonight, asshole.” She smiled, indicating she was joking. As Van ordered for them, Rowan just smiled at the waiter and then turned back to Van. “You’re wonderful.” She snuggled in closer into his arms and kissed him lightly. “So, baby, how have you been? I feel like it’s been a while since we’ve talked together. I missed you.” She fixed his hair and kissed him again.
